Do You Need a Sticker If You Have CCTV? If you’re thinking about installing CCTV at your home or business, you’ve probably come across the advice to “put up a CCTV sign.” But is it just good practice, or is it a legal requirement?
Let’s break down whether you legally need a sticker if you have CCTV installed in the UK.
Yes – You Do Need a Sticker (In Most Cases)
If your CCTV system records people outside your private property, such as on a public footpath, shared driveway, or road, you must comply with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
This includes clearly informing people that they are being recorded, and the easiest way to do that is by putting up CCTV signage.
The rules apply to:
- Businesses, especially shops, offices, and commercial sites
- Homes where the cameras face beyond your own boundaries
- Any premises where staff, visitors, or the general public could be filmed
What Should the Sign Say?
Your CCTV sign doesn’t need to be overcomplicated, but it must be clear, visible, and contain key information, including:
- That CCTV is in operation
- The purpose of the monitoring (e.g. “for security and crime prevention”)
- Who is responsible for the system (usually your business name)
- Contact details for more information (often a website or phone number)
Position the sign where people will see it before entering the area being recorded—ideally at eye level and near entrances.
Do You Still Need a Sign If the CCTV Is Only Inside?
If your CCTV only monitors the inside of your property, and no members of the public are being recorded, you’re generally not required to display a sign. However, if you have staff or customers coming into the building, a sign is still recommended—and often legally required.
In short, if someone other than you could be recorded, it’s best to put a sign up.
What Happens If You Don’t Display a Sign?
Failing to inform people they’re being recorded is a breach of data protection law and could lead to complaints or enforcement action from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Even if you’re using CCTV for genuine security reasons, transparency is essential.
